Alamedan Ben Krause Competes Against The Likes of Michael Phelps at Santa Clara Grand Prix

Alameda Islander and AHS swimmer Ben Krause competed against some of the best swimmers in the world at last weekend's Grand Prix in Santa Clara.

Krause qualified in 3 events: 400 meter free (4:22.04), 400 meter IM (4:54.07), and 200 meter fly (2:10.66.) These were not his best times but the Grand Prix didn't line up with his training schedule. We might see him in the Grand Prix finals one of these days though.

It's a small venue so it must have been very exciting to see so many Olympians compete up close.

Oakland's Live Oak Memorial Pool to be shuttered July 1.

The Live Oak Memorial Pool in Oakland -- utilized by the CUDA swim team -- is being closed on July 1, 2011.

The Oakland Parks and Recreation Supervisor announced this to CUDA representatives earlier today and the closure intends to be permanent.

This same story is unfolding all across the country. Pools are in needs of repair and nobody has capital, and they make a good target for closure because of the high operating costs dinging cash-strapped cities. Read more »

Cal Bears When NCAA Men's Swimming Championship for First Time in 31 Years

The No. 1-ranked California men's swimming team, powered by national titles by senior Nathan Adrian and a victory in the 400 free relay during the final day of the meet, earned its top ranking by winning the 2011 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday (March 26) at the Dorothy L. Shepard Pool in Minneapolis. The Golden Bears, led by fourth-year coach David Durden, won their first NCAA team title in men's swimming since capturing back to back titles under Nort Thornton in 1979-80. Read more »

Pacific Swimming, representing more than 125 swim teams in Northern California, named Alameda Islander Maddy Delore as Most Outstanding Swimmer in 10-under girls for short course competition 2010. Read more »

No. 2 Cal Upsets No. 1 USC in Water Polo

The No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team scored the first five goals of the match and never looked back, upsetting No. 1 ranked USC, 12-9, Saturday (Oct. 16) morning at McDonald's Swim Stadium in Los Angeles. The Golden Bears, who for the second time in the last two weeks have upset teams ranked higher in the national polls, were led by junior Ivan Rackov's three goals and received two goals apiece from senior Zach White and juniors Charlie Steffens and Zach Greenwood. Sophomore goalie Justin Parsons registered 10 saves. Read more »
